The
elegiac illusiveness and density of Venice’s cultural layers noted by
Joseph Brodsky’s “Venetian Strophes” have become the theme of Vladimir
Nasedkin’s new artistic project. The book consists of 16 poems and 16
engravings that show a piercing sincerity and clarity of artistic
expression. The
genre of the “Artist’s Book” (Livre d’Artiste) attracts modern artists
for a special reason. In the attempt to try and create one’s own
artefact in a traditional or perhaps more archaeological form of a book,
there is a certain provocation and specific artistic temptation.

My illustrations to Brodskyâs poems are called illustrations mostly
for convenience as they are rather gravures dedicated to the subject of
the masterâs poetry as a whole and I hope they embody the quintessence
of the poetâs creative spirit willing to comprehend the mystery of
eternity by guesswork rather than by logic. I apply the principle of
understatement, implication and aesthetic printed on original special
wooden forms made by the artist. allusion so as to involve the viewerâs
imagination and to individualize the perception process and make it as
unique as the process of executed with the application of a unique front
woodcutting creation itself. The seashore, the wave, the lagoon, the
landscape æ everything is subject to motion and light, and the silvery
background is not only a surface, it is the áspaceâ. The áspaceâ with
its own laws, stress fields, accents and periphery, where hollow spaces
and pauses bear the main rhythmical and emotional load

Nowadays we travel thanks to the
INTERNET without
leaving our home and set off to realms we have not yet dreamt about.
Travelling
via hyperlinks through the landscapes of the World Wide Web is an
imitation of
a journey but this is the reality of today.
I get my first impressions of a planned trip to one
country or another from using Google Earth where I can set the altitude
and
take satellite photos which have the most expressive and interesting
topography. The next stage is to travel to these locations to get my own
impressions and emotions in order to create my works using the various
coloured landscapes.
